Last week, following my acquisition of a legit license for Windows Server 2003 through DreamSpark and the conclusion of my spring classes, I decided to reconfigure and reevaluate my home server. I use the server for several things, including website/application hosting, hosting sites for a few friends, sharing files, sharing printers, managing a VPN, and backing up myself and my family. After one week of trying to get Windows to do all of these efficiently, I gave up and downloaded the Linux distro that I was most familiar with, Ubuntu…Server edition (8.04) that is.
So far, experience with my new command line based Linux system has been more than satisfactory. Out of the box, Ubuntu sets itself up as a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) Server, Mail Server, [Samba] File Server, SSH Server, and Print Server. Within just one week I was successful in configuring it with the following:
- Apache 2 Web Server w/ virtual hosting for multiple sites
- PHP processing
- MySQL database (now running mine and Matt’s Wordpress blog)
- Secure browsing via an SSL certificate
- Secure access via SSH (& SFTP for that matter)
- FTP file access (passive)
- Dynamic DNS negotiation
- User accounts for website and file share owners
- IPP Print Server via CUPS
Still on the list of things to do are (not in any particular Automatic Backup Server via RSYNC?
Hopefully I will be able to post a few tutorials tomorrow or later this week. I know Branden was helping me with some stuff last week, but if anyone else is interested in my Linux adventure, do let me know.
