Unix Hosting News & Commentary
My Top 3

In the eternal quest for a web host that provides a good ad-free platform, I found this. I do not know for sure if it actually is ad-free or allows me to add code and files to my blog, but from what I have seen while lurking around here it seems that way.

I guess that the first entry in a blog should be about myself, because unlike real websites, it may or may not be apparent that I am the author (?, that does not make sense, however everyone else is doing it).

My name is irrelevant, I am a programmer that works a lot with networked programs and services in the GNU/Linux and UNIX environment. I however seem to not get much of my work published, unless it is work related (day job), I figured that is because when I am 100% sure about how to do something and everything just flows, I get bored, I do not learn anything, I do not developing myself then. So much is never release to the pubic, however on those rare occasions when I do publish something, my work will go under either the GPL-license or I will release it into the public domain, depending on what it is I made.

My preferred languages are C, PHP and Python, I do however know a lot more languages more or less, like C++, Perl, Java, C#, VB6, VB.NET and BASIC. I have been programming since I was around 10 years old, and first saw QBASIC in action (quite some time ago, ~94ish). Of course I jumped in and out of programming under the 10 following years until I figured out that I actually did want to focus on programming. Since then I have developed many kinds of applications like HTTP-servers, IRC-servers, VOIP-clients and servers (P2P pretty much in that case), text-editors, network-utilities, text-utilities, MMORPG’s (in pygame mostly, however I developed several games in C++ with allegro before that), most of my programs and scripts are made to be ran under GNU/Linux, but are not limited to.

As you have probably understood I am a great follower of free software, and in the words of Richard Stallman: “Think free speech, not free beer” when talking about free software. I believe that software should be free and everyone should be given the right to modify that software for their own sake or to make it better for everyone, preferably the last. I do not write software that limits people, I do not write software for money (I do write software for salary on my day job, but that is for my rent, and it is for a specific costumer, I do not write software that is sold in stores for money and with no source code, I would rather quit my job than doing that.), I do not write software for fame. I mostly write it because either I need a script or program to do something, or I want do see if I can do something, of I do it for proof of concept or I do it because the program is needed by many people.

I intend to use this blog to publish source code and tips, and these entries will, if not mentioned otherwise, be made for GNU/Linux, so I may or may not specify what platform the code is made to run on, default is GNU/Linux, I will see if I can remember that myself.

So thats that. Thats my presentations of myself.
