Völlig überraschend hat Kernel-Koordinator Linus Torvalds seine Mitarbeit an allen Linux-Projekten eingestellt. In einer Stellungnahme auf comp.os.linux.announce führt er seine Gründe weiter aus: Gegen die zunehmende Bedrohungen durch Softwarepatente sowie die Bestechungen großer Softwarehersteller könne sich ein freies System nicht durchsetzen. Er werde nun als Entwickler bei der finanziell angeschlagenen SCO einsteigen und den Kernel in einer kommerziellen Variante weiterführen. Er prüfe weiterhin, ob sich Teile des Kerns durch Patente schützen ließen, betonte jedoch, dass aktiven Entwicklern des offenen Zweiges keine rechtlichen Schritte drohen. Man wolle mit dieser Maßnahme vielmehr Betreiber von kommerziellen Linux-Server wie z.B. Webhoster für die neue SCO-Distribution gewinnen.

Als erste Reaktion kündigte Kernel-Guru Alan Cox seinen Arbeitsvertrag beim Linux-Distributor “Red Hat” und verlangte, dass alle von ihm eingesandten Patches aus dem Kernel entfernt werden. Einige stunden nach der Forderung wurden die offiziellen GIT-Repositories vorerst für eingehende Bugfixes und Feature-Enhancements gesperrt. Entwickler wurden angehalten Quellcode nach betroffenen Stellen zu durchsuchen und ggf. zu löschen. Nach ersten Schätzungen von Heise wird diese Aufräumaktion mindestens zwei Monate in Anspruch nehmen.

Wer fortan die Betreung des offenen Kernels übernehmen soll ist noch nicht geklärt. Sowohl die Mozilla Foundation als auch Google wollten keine Stellungnahme abgeben. Das Open Souce Lab des Softwaregiganten Microsoft hat indes Gespräche bestätigt - sofern alle Linux-Kompatiblen Office-Pakete OOXML als Standard-Dateiformat einführen, so würde das Redmonder Unternehmen die Koordination, Hosting sowie Patentverwertung übernehmen. Als neuer Name (Linux ist eine eingetragene Marke) ist auf vielen Mailinglisten bereits “Microsoft OpenSky 2009 Server Beta 1 RC 0.5″ im Gespräch.

Few months back I moved one of my websites from a shared hosting service provider to virtual dedicated server on Linode. I had to do that to set my own memory limits in PHP configurations and do other performance optimisations. I tried many performance optimisation techniques like Squid cache, MySQL optimisation, PHP APC and eAccelerator, Apache thread and process limits, code optimisations, installing mod_deflate etc etc. Though I have seen some good performance improvement, website response time is not satisfactory during peak load times. For some time now I am considering about moving my site to a dedicated server.  Currently Linode is my VPS hosting service provider.

They are migrating all the hosting plans from UML ( user mode linux) to XEN.

I hear many webmasters say that XEN is better than UML.

So, for now I have decided to wait and watch the  performance improvements after migrating to XEN. If it is satisfactory I will stay with Linode. Their customer support is excellent. If performance is poor even after migration to XEN, then I have to move to a Intel Xeon based dedicated server.

Come back after some time to see which one fared well in this experiment..

I decided to share with you a little tip :

- Hosting games on Warcraft III (The Frozen Throne) under wine on Ubuntu Hardy (LAN & Battle Net) -

. Ubuntu (Hardy).
. Wine via official Repositories ().
. Nvidia / ATI drivers installed and working.
. Ports 6112 ~ 6119 () are redirected to your computer IP address if you are behind a router.
. You can play Warcraft III with wine.

x Warcraft III is running good, but you can’t host LAN games or create Custom Games on Battlenet.
When you’re hosting a game, everything looks good, ports are open and redirected, but no one can join …
- for all the clients that are trying to join.

Same problem when hosting LAN games …
This problem have been introduced in a very old version of Wine.
This “bug”, back in those days, broke the entire Battle Net access, and LAN games.
The Battle Net bug was pretty fast fixed.

The Problem ?

They never fixed the problem about hosting games (as far as i know) since this version of wine.
And this, since version 0.40, today, on hardy, the official version is 0.58!
And absolutely no workable fix or patch for this Warcaft III/Wine problem.

Believe me, after LOTS of researches and tries, there is no other solutions except to downgrade wine …
When i use version 0.40, i can host games on LAN and/or over Battle Net.

So a little :

$sudo apt-get remove wine

Will remove wine.

Get this version of wine

$sudo dpkg -i

Will install this old version of wine (v0.40) wich was for Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 (i386).
